Course Description:
Small and special, this petite Connecticut chest was obviously intended to keep treasured keepsakes safe. The pattern combines flowers, foliage, and birds in a delicate and graceful motif complete with a monogram. Like the better-known Guilford blanket chests of this period, the pattern is developed with a combination of red, off-white, and black color. In fact, this is an ideal companion piece to sit upon a blanket chest such as the display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

The students will be encouraged to become familiar with some basic brush stroke techniques and develop insights on how to reduce and interpret pattern. The bun feet and drawer add to the charm to this piece, which will be constructed by Mark Murphy. It measures approximately 1" H x 1 ½" W x ¾" D. It could also be appropriately considered a child’s possession.

Time: 12 hours. Completion is likely.

Power Tools: none

Skill Level: All levels.

Materials Fee: $125 to be collected at school.
