Course Description:
This turning class will introduce students to the basics of freehand bowl turning in addition to some more advanced techniques and a few “tricks of the trade” the instructor has learned over the years. The object of the class will be to turn a set of nesting bowls. Students will turn, sand, and finish a series of thin-walled bowls. The bowls, when set side by side will have the same inside and outside shapes and when stacked together their rims will be level with one another. Students will have the opportunity to make multiple sets or larger sets based on experience and other time commitments. By making multiple bowls students will have a chance to hone their newly learned skills. This repetition should make the individual skills easier to retain when the Guild School is over and students are back at their own lathes. The technique of freehand duplicating of shapes will be useful for any project requiring a “pair” of…candlesticks, vases, etc.

Time: 12 hours. Completion is likely.

Power Tools: lathe

Skill Level: Beginner. Good eye-hand coordination is a benefit. If students are comfortable with other power tools, they should be fine with the lathe. The object is not to copy the instructor, but to make an object that is pleasing to the student’s eye, while learning new techniques.

Materials Fee: $30 (turning tools will be available for optional purchase)
