Course Description:
This will be a fun class, easy and slow-paced with a good introduction to the basic use of the lathe and some of its attachments. Students will learn the basics of adjusting and using the lathe to make the parts of the punch bowl. The finished bowl will be 7/8" H x 1 1/8" in diameter. Students will also learn basic silver soldering by first practicing on scrap silver and then soldering the base to the bowl. Students who wish to engrave the coat of arms on the bowl will be provided with a pattern that will be a simplified version of the engraving in the photo. They will be given instruction on how to use an Xacto knife to engrave it. This will be optional. The last step will be finishing the bowl to a high polish using the flexshaft and the buffing machine. The class is designed to teach the techniques that will make it possible for someone with no experience to make this classic punch bowl.
Time: 24 hours. Students will have time to finish the piece in the time allotted and there will be plenty of silver available for those who finish early and want to make something else or to practice their turning skills.
