Course Description:
The utility dresser (approximately 7" H x 4 7/8" W x 1 5/8" D) is based on pieces built in the early days of America. These dressers were usually found in the kitchen where they were used to store and display household collections of crockery, glassware, tin and pewter. Drawers and shelves in the base were used to store linens and tableware.

Construction methods include mortise and tenon joinery for the base face frame and raised panel doors; conventional drawer construction; scroll work on the base, top and sides; and installation of a built-up molding at the top of the piece. Decorative cuts are made into the base face frame to simulate small raised panels. Students will have the option of using either a powered scroll saw or hand-held jeweler’s saw to make the decorative scroll cuts. Other details include installation of the drawer knobs, door knobs, door hinges, and hand-shaped latches. Some pieces will be pre-cut to
size and the door knobs and drawer knobs will be provided. Methods used to create the molding pieces will be demonstrated. Three of the built-up pieces, mitered at the corners, are a dentil molding, quarter-round, and concave molding. There is a single shelf installed in the base and two shelves installed in the top using dados. The class will include instruction regarding the use of templates, jigs, and fixtures to aid in the construction process.

The instructor will demonstrate the finish and distressing applied to the prototype and will provide all materials to duplicate the dark bluish-green finish on the prototype which consists of stain and acrylic paints. Generally, the finishing and distressing is left to the discretion of each student. Students are invited to bring acrylic paints or other materials to achieve the finish they would like to have.

Time: 24 hours. Completion is likely. However, the finishing option selected by students may affect the completion time.
