Course Description:
This is an introductory to intermediate turning class that will teach students the basics of freehand bowl turning. As well, students will learn more advanced techniques such as laminating different materials, turning a “closed” form, and turning and fitting a lid. The object of the course will be to make a footed bowl with a neck and fitted lid. The foot and neck of the bowl will be made of one material, while the body of the bowl will be of a different material. The lid may be of either material and will be tightly fitted in the neck of the bowl. As this is a freehand course, the general shape and size will be decided by the students. However, the shape must be such that the bowl is “closed” or that the neck is considerably narrower than the body. Students will learn how to hollow the shape to have uniformly thin walls. Sanding techniques will be taught, as well as the application of the final finish. The finish for this piece will be hard turner’s wax that is applied while the piece is turning in the lathe. Alternate finishes will be discussed as well. These new skills will be of use for other closed form turning and particularly valuable to students wanting to turn manmade materials in the future.
Time: 24 hours. Completion is likely.

Skill Level: Beginner and intermediate. Good eye-hand coordination is a benefit. If students are comfortable with other power tools, they should be fine with the lathe. The object is not to copy the instructor, but to make a shape personally pleasing to the student’s eye.
