36 Hour Class Instructor: Course: Project: Stained Glass Window
|
Course Description: From a solid sheet of silver to a jewel-like silver framed work of art, students will work with a flexshaft, saw, and enamels to create a special miniature window to enjoy hanging in a miniature house or roombox. The window will not need to be installed in a frame, but can be made such that it will look lovely suspended from chain in front of an existing window, or in a conservatory, or glass-walled room. In this hands-on, project-oriented class, students will pierce and saw a sheet of sterling silver into a fine handmade framework and then fill in the openings with tiny bits of transparent and translucent glass, which will then be fired in a kiln. Several metal working skills will be taught, including jewelry making techniques such as piercing, sawing, filing, and patinating, while using such tools as the flexshaft and jeweler’s saw. Enameling skills will also be taught and will include the special technique of plique-a-jour “in air” enamel application, as well as instruction in the basics of working with enamels: grading, washing, wet packing/inlaying, firing, and finishing. Grinding of lump enamel will also be demonstrated. Two or three pattern designs will be available and students will have a choice as to the design and color selection for their project. Class discussion will cover design and the nature of the joining of the silver and enamel. Students will complete a window while learning the design parameters for adapting and replicating other windows and for creating their own designs. Time: 36 hours. Completion is likely. Power Tools: flex shaft Skill Level: Beginner and intermediate. This class is Materials Fee: $50 to be collected at school
