Course Description:
In this class the students will go through all of the procedures for making these classic New England armchairs while also constructing a simple tapered leg table. The main focus of the class will be on carving the seat, shaping the steam-bent arms and bow, and making all of the turnings. The students should expect to become quite skilled on the lathe. When making the table, students will learn the mortise and tenon joinery and breadboard edging on the top. After the table and chairs are constructed, students will complete them by learning the instructor’s painting and aging techniques—to give them a worn “patina”.

Time: 36 hours. Students should expect to completely finish the table and one of the chairs in class and have all of the parts made to finish the second chair at home.

Power Tools: table saw, scroll saw, lathe, flexshaft, drill press, shaper

Skill Level: Intermediate

Materials Fee: $65 to be collected at school
