Tall Clock
Carol Hardy, IGMA Fellow
Materials fee: $85
The most prolific of Lynchburg, Virginia clock producers was the partnership of Jehu Williams and John Victor who were in business for thirty years from about 1814–1845. This clock by Williams and Victor parallels both British and American approaches in its features and was a traditional eight-day design. The skillfully painted moon dial with boat scene and landscape that is identical to those on British examples. The original clock case was made from highly-figured mahogany solids and veneers with white-oak interior woods. The broken-scroll pediments on the hood and chamfered case edges suggest a locally popular style. Clock hands and a reproduction copy of the painted face will be provided for students to insert in the hoods. Clock construction techniques and joinery will be emphasized in the class. Students will use traditional construction on the base with ogee bracket feet; waist with hinged door, (weights and pendulum provided) and, hood with pediment, columns, and hinged door. Finishing techniques will be discussed and applied if time permits. Detailed instructions and measured drawings will be provided.
