Taunton Chest and Hat Box
Sue Rountree, IGMA Artisan
Materials fee: $55
A small painted white pine chest and a hat box in the Abby Aldrich Folk Art Museum at Colonial Williamsburg will be studied and painted. Known as a Taunton Chest, it is one of over twenty chests believed to have been made by Robert Crossman, a drum maker in Taunton, Massachusetts between 1725 and 1740. It has one drawer at the bottom, and a lidded top.
The cream and red floral design was painted on a brown base on both the drawer and the front of the chest. Other designs by this craftsman will be studied, and participants will be able to replicate the original design, or can create a design using photographs of other chests in the manner of Robert Crossman.
The 19th-century Hat Box has a simple crosshatch design on the sides and the popular weeping willow design on the top. Other hat boxes from the collection will be studied and can be used as design sources.
Methods of achieving an aged finish will be discussed and applied to this project.
