Bill Studebaker’s Monday afternoon seminar in 2011 was so well received he is returning to share another afternoon with Colonial Williamsburg GSP students. He has been digging around in his old toolbox again and found…a soldering iron? No, it’s actually a miniature woodburning tool!

Woodburning as a craft form has been around for centuries. Woodworkers have long used hot sand to scorch the edges of inlays in fine marquetry designs to lend a sense of depth and shadow. The late Victorian period saw Pyrography (drawing with fire) touted as an acceptable artistic endeavor for ladies, while its successor Pyro-carving, featuring heavier charring, was better suited for embellishing Art and Crafts style pieces.

Our goal in this workshop will be to use the tool as a fine drawing implement in order to simulate various wood grains and figures in scale. Techniques learned in this class will be useful if you are planning on taking Bill’s class in 2013! Tools and techniques will help in many other projects as well. All tools you need are
