The GAMBLE House From the 1880?s through the early part of the 20th century, the Arts and Crafts movement espoused hand craftsmanship and embraced earthy materials such as richly grained wood, natural stone, art glass, and copper. The Gamble House is widely recognized as a model of the Arts and Crafts style of architecture, furnishings, and decorative arts. Built in 1908 as a vacation home for David Gamble, heir of Procter and Gamble, it is the work of the brothers Charles and Henry Greene. The Gamble House is considered their masterpiece. It has richly finished teak interiors and contains nearly all the original furniture and lighting fixtures designed expressly for it by the Greene brothers. Our September, 2008 Guild Study Program will take place there. Pasadena, California is the site of many other Arts and Crafts houses as well. The Program will begin Friday with tours of the neighborhood containing many Greene & Greene houses and the Gamble House. The tours will be followed by dinner at the Gamble House. Classes will be held at the Courtyard Marriott Hotel, about 1/2 mile from the Gamble House. Note: The Huntington Library, located close to the Gamble House and Courtyard Marriott hotel has an extensive collection of Greene & Greene furniture and decorative arts on exhibit.
