Regency Tricoteuse Work Table, Circa 1812
The class project is a typical example of this type of work table with a Louis XVI influence. However, this table was based on a plate in Sheraton’s drawing book of 1792. Tricoteuse literally translates from the French as a (female) knitter. The term is used to refer to the old women who used to sit around the guillotine knitting during the Reign of Terror in France in the 18th Century.
From a prepared cutting list, students will cut and shape a rectangular top with a three quarter gallery. The brass trellis filled end supports will be joined by a shaped undertier with a pierced gallery, on downswept legs and small ball feet. Skills and techniques learned will include: accurate assembly, fretwork legs, brasswork, and veneering.
