INSTRUCTOR:

Iulia Chin Lee, Artisan

COURSE:

Furniture Construction

PROJECT:

Queen Anne Side Chair with Rush Seat

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The Queen Ann style was in vogue from about 1702 to 1745 in England. By some collectors, the Queen Anne style is called the “Dutch style”. Although the reign of Queen Anne was short (from 1702 to 1714), in the American colonies the style began a few years later than in England and continued until about 1755–1760.

The Queen Anne side chair shown is in the instructor’s own collection of American chairs. It is dated about 1725. The chair is of the Hudson Valley, New York, origin. This type of chair is generally made of maple or other local hard wood and was very popular, especially in the country districts. The techniques involved in this project are spindle turning on a lathe, cutting curved lines with a jeweler’s saw, dowel-socket jointing, mortise-tenon jointing, and rushing the seat. The students will learn to turn on a lathe and make identical parts without using duplicators. The basic turning technique involved is spindle turning. The instructor will guide students step-by-step to acquire the techniques needed. Students will also learn how to use a jeweler’s saw to cut curve contour. Mortise-tenon joints and dowel-socket joints will be used for assembly of the chair. Finally, the students will learn to twist jute and rush the seat.

In the class the instructor will discuss the construction of chairs and how to make scale mechanical drawings for miniature furniture. She will also share with the students her experience in furniture making for the past two decades and pass on the invaluable knowledge she has gained through years’ of studies.
