Geoff Wonnacott, Fellow
Furniture Construction
French Transitional Louis XV–XVI Bureau
Combining the elegant curves of typical Louis XV furniture and the simpler lines of the Louis XVI style, this attractive bureau will easily fit into most collections.
Skills and techniques to be learned include: accurate shaping and construction; parquetry and veneering; and brasswork/gallery construction. From a prepared cutting list of timber, students will construct and veneer the desk to the working drawing. The slight cabriole legs will be shaped, drawers will be made, and parquetry applied to the fronts before cross banding. The superstructure is centered by a burr galleried top. It has curved shelves and a pull-out leather writing surface where letters were carefully written (letters are pieces of paper people used to write on in that period, commonly known as e-mail today). Brass mounts, traditional pierced handles, and key plates finish the piece with style.
