COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Books are an integral part of most miniature settings and once students have completed this course they will have the necessary skills to go home and continue to add to their miniature library. Students will make at least: an autograph book with a full leather cover; an open book, Struwelpeter—a Victorian children’s book; and a fully printed book, Spells and Potions, with a leather cover with blind tooling. The contents are merely home remedies (nothing sinister).

brearFor each teaching session, a different technique and binding will be taught. In each case, the skills will be built upon what was learned in a previous session. In this way, students will feel a sense of familiarity with the process, but will also feel a sense of progression. Sufficient time has been allowed to give students the satisfaction of mastering the skills taught. Consolidation is the key word. If time allows, the instructor will demonstrate more techniques such as quarter bindings, which students can then try for themselves.

Students will be supplied with a selection of very thin leathers that will make working in this scale a pleasure. Especially fine papers have been chosen to ensure ease of making a delicate, in-scale end product. Students will be working with a selection of hand-made Italian marbled end papers. There will be plenty of extra materials available for those who finish early and who want to make another book or who simply want to practice the skills taught. On some covers students will have an opportunity to do blind tooling using tools that have been especially manufactured for miniature books.

The techniques used are traditional techniques employed in full sized bookbinding—only the fineness of the materials used and the scale of the books varies. It is “guaranteed” that students will be delighted with the end results and will have had sufficient time to master the techniques taught. And, since making miniature books requires no specialized equipment, students will be able to continue making their own books after they have left school.
