INSTRUCTOR: Beth Freeman-Kane, Artisan
COURSE: Box Framed Composition
PROJECT: American Robin with Daffodils (This class is full)

This class project is a box framed composition during which students will learn a variety of technical skills that go into making an artistic/interpretive scene. Composition techniques will be taught as we “build” the composition in the same way one would a painting; the only difference is that we are using sculptural elements that students will construct and assemble themselves. Watch the scene literally come to life in your hands! In keeping with the time frame for this class, the resin cast robin will be provided and students will learn some acrylic painting techniques. Color mixing, blending, and all that one needs to know about painting objects “in the round” ...amazingly, as much skill/know how is required as if it were a flat painting! The rock is also resin cast (from a real rock). Students will learn to paint it using dry brushing and glazing so that it looks real.
Next, students will learn some flower making as they construct the daffodils and tiny flowers using
paper, polymer clay, wire, and different glues. For the
landscaping, students will be introduced to a variety of
interesting and unusual materials, and taught to create
the textures required for a naturalistic scene. There is
definitely room for individual interpretation at this point;
so be ready to have fun and experiment!
Finally, students will be taught the basics of box framing (a very useful “know how”). The composition will have that professionally finished look and be ready to hang when the student returns home! Everything will be provided including the frame and some interesting, hard to find materials.
