INSTRUCTOR: Mary Grady O’Brien, Fellow
COURSE: Folk Art Oil Painting
PROJECT: Decorated Child’s Footstool, Circa 1830-40 (This class is FULL)

This diminutive stool, from the New England or Pennsylvania area, was clearly intended to be enjoyed by the children of the home. The pleasing decoration features flowers, baskets of strawberries, and delicate striping on a cheerful yellow background.
Reflected in the pattern are the common motifs found in the female ornamental arts of the Mid-Atlantic states during this period. Similar designs are found on fancy chairs, furniture, theorem painting, tinware, and needlework. The pallet for this piece will consist of red, green and yellow ochre, combined with delicate black accents. A truly pleasing blend of cheerful color and graceful pattern. It promises to become a special addition to any period room and a charming example of folk art for your collection.
