PROJECT: Crazy Quilting Techniques and Stitches

richards

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Crazy quilting hit its height of popularity in the Victorian era when decoration on every available surface was very in vogue. Using all the sewing skills at her disposal, the Victorian seamstress joined scraps of silk, satin, velvet, and any other interesting fabrics she had and embellished the seams with a fabulous variety of stitches. She embroidered sentimental motifs, dates and initials, adding beads and buttons to any and all plain surfaces remaining. It was, in most cases, an over the top extravaganza which people tend to either hate or love. I love them!

In this class the instructor will teach her method used for piecing to assemble scraps of silk into shapes suitable for a pillow top. Starting with basic stitches and moving into some more complicated ones, students will join the pieces together and embellish them to their heart’s content. A little practice and they will find themselves dreaming up new ways to combine stitches and colors for maximum effect. Later, the instructor will show students how to make some simple motifs for decorating the larger spaces; and lastly, students add the occasional tiny button and other trims. Expect a fun and rewarding experience!
