COURSE: Polymer Clay Sculpting
PROJECT: Sculpting the Character Figure

hurd

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This is a chance to discover the figure maker within you—for newcomers to the world of figure sculpting or to experienced ones who want to re-tune their skills. The main aim of this class is to create figures unique to each student. Students are encouraged to bring in their own ideas of what they’d like to do and, with help, experiment to see if it’s possible to achieve.

Students will be taught how to sculpt an average face of the male or female in readiness to make a two- part plaster mould. Once complete, they can reproduce this many times giving them the opportunity to discover their own skills. In this class time will be taken to give the faces expression—anger, laughter, fear or whatever is needed to give the face and body life and tell the story students want to portray.

Then students will move to hands and feet, before assembling the complete figure. Newer techniques for painting and wigging will be taught. Once students have learned the whole process, it’s all systems go and students are encouraged to develop their ideas and break all the rules.

This is a sculpting class and dressmaking is not taught, though there will be simple patterns available and time will be given to dress one figure.
