INSTRUCTOR: Jane Davies, Artisan
COURSE: Sewing and Fabric Manipulation
PROJECT: Making Authentic Costume Trims

Finding suitable trimmings for miniature costumes can be such a problem. Recently, while browsing through 18th and early 19th Century fashion pictures, it dawned upon the instructor that before the arrival of machinemade trimmings, seamstresses often made their own from the fabrics of gowns. Hand-woven fabrics were expensive so such use of the scraps made good sense. Once the instructor had mastered miniature pinked edges, she had endless ideas to add to her collection of trimmings designs using embroidery, lace, cords, and ribbons. The instructor is delighted to teach students to make any designs from her collection.
So as to waste no time, students will receive a prepared piece of striped (lines to follow) silk to work on. This will not only provide a permanent reference it also makes an unusual decorative item to frame. Students will be able to choose the designs on which they wish to work and pick their own colours from the materials offered. Use of colour will be demonstrated and discussed. This will be an informal and relaxing class with no time constraints.
