INSTRUCTOR: Beth Freeman-Kane, Artisan
COURSE: Box Framed Composition
PROJECT: Chickadees (THIS CLASS IS FULL)

This project is a box framed composition featuring a pair of chickadees in a natural setting. A variety of technical skills will be taught while creating this lovely artistic/ interpretive scene including painting, landscaping, flower making, and framing. Students will learn how to build a 3D composition using sculptural elements in much the same way as one would a flat painting.
For the purpose of this class the resin-cast bird sculptures will be provided and students will learn the necessary acrylic painting techniques like colour mixing, blending, and all that one needs to know for painting objects in the round. The little birds will then be mounted on a neglected rustic fence, which will be made from a bit of natural wood and copper wire. Application of appropriate age and rust will be taught all using paint.
Students will then learn to create some cosmos flowers from scratch and have some fun with the natural landscape. At this point there is definitely room for individual interpretation! Several interesting materials will provided to create the different elements in the scene including deer hair, wire, paper, and different glues…the end result being so life-like students will have to watch their birds very carefully to make sure they don’t fly away before the frame is put on!
Finally, the composition is contained in a neat frame giving it that “professionally finished” look. The completed project will be easy to pack and ready to hang upon returning home.
