INSTRUCTOR: Beth Freeman-Kane, Artisan
COURSE: Painting/Landscaping
PROJECT: Grey Shrike

This project is a “stand alone” sculpture piece, ideal to add to any collection, display in a dome, or place in a dollhouse garden. The main skills that will be taught are painting and landscaping, with a special focus on contrasting textures…the smooth softness of the bird compared to the roughness of old wood and dry grass and some delicate plants. For the purpose of this class the resin-cast bird sculpture will be provided and then all the necessary acrylic painting techniques will be taught in order to bring it to life! Students will learn to mix and blend colours, define the shape of the shrike by its markings, and accentuate the roundness of form through subtle shading. The bird will then be mounted on an old fence post which students will handmake and then make it look “aged” using paint.
Next students will make some wild flowers from scratch and start building the landscape using a variety of interesting materials. This is always a fun stage in the project and there is definitely room for individual interpretation! The base will be made from polymer clay, the grass from deer hair…and the other elements will come together as students use sand, flocking, fine wire, paper, and different glues to bring the scene to life! All materials will be provided. Come prepared to have fun!
