COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This piece is based on an antique hooked rug from the Collections of Historic New England. According to their website the original rug is dated somewhere between 1868 and 1899. The maker is unknown.

The original rug was a bequest of Elizabeth R. Vaughan to Historic New England. Emily and Elise Tyson (Vaughan) owned a house in South Berwick, Maine that was apparently used as a summer home. The house, known as the Hamilton House, is now in the possession of Historic New England. According to Jeanne Gamble, Library and Archive Specialist with Historic New England, the women “enjoyed collecting a variety of objects such as antique furniture, dolls, and glass. Folk art, particularly decorative items and textiles worked by women, was a favorite collectible.”

The class will focus on making consistently even French Knots. There will also be discussion about different threads and the use of different colors used to replicate the aged look of the old rugs.

TIME: 12 hours. Completion is not likely; however, there will be instruction on how to finish the completed rug.

POWER TOOLS: moto tool

SKILL LEVEL: All levels

MATERIALS FEE: $20 to be collected at school
