PROJECT: Decorated Fireman Parade Hat

The allure of the volunteer firefighter companies was contagious. These instant heroes were performing invaluable service to their communities. Membership was determined by ballot and composed of professionals, tradesmen, and laborers. The colorful Parade Hats where indicators of prestige for the young men who served.
Students in this class will have the opportunity to decorate a miniature replica representing an exciting period in American history. It promises to become a colorful addition to any folk art collection. So many of these fragile originals survived because they were so valued.
Students will have a fully prepped hat ready to be decorated with a design that is both charming and colorful. Techniques learned in this class will be helpful with other folk art projects, plus build confidence for working with oil paints.
