COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Egg tempera is one of the oldest forms of painting. It was extremely popular in Europe during the Renaissance. Egg tempera does require some old fashioned craftsmanship, but is wonderfully adaptable to both traditional and contemporary styles of painting. Learning traditional techniques and history of this method, students will create one small contemporary still life study in egg tempera each day. Five paintings in total, with the option to choose their own simple subject on day five, will be completed by the end of the week. Discussion will include how to make homemade gesso, prepare a panel, complete an egg tempera painting, and apply gold leaf. However, the primary amount of class time will be spent painting on prepared panels. The five still life studies include, an apple, a key, a candle, a flower, and finally a stack of pancakes, toy block or students choice. On our final day we experiment with gold leaf application. There will also be the option of framing one or all the pieces on the final day.

TIME: 12 hours. Completion is likely if students work overtime.

POWER TOOLS: None

SKILL LEVEL: Beginner

MATERIALS FEE: $70 to be collected at school. There is an optional fee of $4–$5 each for frames.
