INSTRUCTOR: Bill Studebaker, Artisan
COURSE: Metalwork
PROJECT: Brass Folding Screen (THIS CLASS IS FULL)

This open grillwork screen draws on elements of the Art Nouveau style to create a purely decorative object. It could serve as a garden gate or trellis, made shorter for use as a fire screen, or, with an opaque backing of fabric, paper or wood it could be of use as a dressing screen in the boudoir.
Starting with brass wire, students will be bending, beating, and filing it to create their screens. They will first build the form and then fill it in with the decorative shapes, soldering as they go. Three separate panels will be made then hinged together, finishing with a patination process, if time allows.
TIME: 12 hours. It is unlikely that the project will be completed by the end of the school week, but the students will have the necessary information and will be given proper instruction and/or demonstration of techniques in order to complete the project on their own.
POWER TOOLS: None
SKILL LEVEL: All levels, but some manual strength will be required as there will be much use of bending and cutting pliers.
MATERIALS FEE: $15 to be collected at school.
