INSTRUCTOR: Pete Acquisto, Fellow
COURSE: Silversmithing/Machining
PROJECT: American Cake Stand/Salver, circa 1720

acquisto

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This beautiful cake stand/salver was made in Boston by William Cowell. The one-inch scale reproduction makes a great project for the lathe. It is circular, with a raised and everted rim; single incised lines at the inner edge; and a quarter-round flange for joining the trumpet foot with the dish. The simple lines of the piece will be perfect for beginner and intermediate students. Students will use the lathe, flex shaft, and the buffing macine to make the two parts that make up the piece. This class will be fun and slow-paced with a good introduction to the basic use of the lathe and some of its attachments. Students will also learn basic soldering by first practicing on scrap silver and then soldering the base to the dish using easy silver solder. The flex shaft machine will be used to polish the cake stand to a high shine. Students will walk away with a very impressive piece.

TIME: 24 hours. Completion is likely.

POWER TOOLS: lathe, flex shaft, buffing machine

SKILL LEVEL: Beginner and intermediate. This class is designed for the person who wants to learn to operate the equipment necessary in machining and silversmithing. However, more intermediate students who have had silversmith or machine experience will find this class to be the perfect opportunity to learn new ways of working with silver, while refining and perfecting existing skills.

MATERIALS FEE: $110 to be collected at school
