COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The fireplace is one of the most prominent features of the American bungalow. The inviting appeal of a roaring fire made this the center of the home not only for its heat, but to bring family and friends together. In this class students will learn basic woodworking skills with both power and hand tools to construct the cherry wood frame with its angled arms and simple but beautiful details. Staining and finishing will also be done. The students will also learn a technique for painting, grouting, and sealing faux field tiles and cinderblock. Three decorative “tiles” will also be set into the field tiles. Several color combinations will be offered in keeping with the arts and crafts period. For the sake of time, the tiled pieces are precut, but students will learn how they can do this technique at home. The result will be a centerpiece that will make the setting a cozy place that to shrink into!
