INSTRUCTOR: Pete & Pam Boorum, Artisans
COURSE: Furniture Construction
PROJECT: Sisters’ Sewing Table

boorum

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This table has an unusual configuration of two drawers that open from either side so that two sisters could share the use of the table and the contents of the drawers. There were many tables like this produced by Shaker communities and sold to “The World” during the 19th and early 20th Centuries. The turned wooden knobs and three shaped legs are characteristic of Shaker stands. The center post is turned on the lathe and fastened to the table top assembly with mortise and tenon. Students will construct the legs using a jeweler’s saw and will cut out the table parts from quarter-sawn cherry lumber using the table saw. The knobs will be turned on the duplicator lathe. Students will learn to use water stain and to apply a lacquer sealer and top coat to give the rubbed luster finish seen on many Shaker pieces. The class emphasis will be on the proper, safe use of the table saw and lathe and on learning fundamental miniature woodworking, woodturning, and wood finishing techniques. No special experience is required.

Just for fun, students will also make an embroidery hoop.
