INSTRUCTOR: Penny Champion, Fellow
COURSE: Stained Glass/Woodworking
PROJECT: Leaded Glass Entry Door Vignette

The two-sided entry door vignette, showing both the inside and outside of a door, is the perfect survey-type project for beginners. Students will be guided through a series of very simple steps: reading plans, measuring accurately, using a table saw, using a gluing jig, stained glass soldering techniques, electrical wiring, and installing interior wall trim. They will also be introduced to bending wood, using elementary techniques.
Students will begin with the leaded windows, fabricating them from brass rods cut to length using jigs created during class. The rods will be soldered together, creating the leaded glass panels. The frame and casings will be steamed and bent. Plan-reading and measuring accurately will come next, as the students make basic table saw cuts and use a gluing jig to maintain squareness while assembling the door and frame. Finally, the students will put the door into a shadow box open on both sides. Wire and light fixtures will be soldered together and installed. Some faux painting will be done on the porch and the interior walls will be trimmed with crown molding and base board.
The finished shadow box is 11" W x 13 ½" H x 8 ½" D, including the frames. Each of these very basic individual skills is easily learned, and when used together will create a lovely finished project.

TIME: 24 hours. Completion is likely if students work overtime.
