INSTRUCTOR: Jane Davies, Artisan
COURSE: Costume Reproduction in Miniature
PROJECT: Dressing a Late 18 th Century Woman (THIS CLASS IS FULL)

The instructor says, “I love this costume from the collection of the Kyoto Costume Institute and have long desired to make it in miniature. To help Castine students to do so will be a joy.” The delicate girlie skirt in combination with the dashing fitted jacket, based on a man's riding jacket, look fresh, fun, and very comfortable. It is a “historical costume” that one can imagine being worn by a real person.
This project involves useful basic techniques to produce actual miniature garments, and some more unusual techniques that are fun to do. Students start with a way that this instructor recently has worked out for making a bustle-pad. It is so neat and really quick. The painting on the skirt looks daunting, but, with the design firmly in place, filling in the colours is a pleasure.
All patterns are provided, but there will be a demonstration on pattern-making and fitting. Everyone will use the same pattern but individuality is encouraged and alternative colour-schemes will be possible. The costume will be made over a manniquin, which is included in the materials fee; or on a jointed, painted, and wigged resin doll exclusive to this class as an option.
TIME: 24 hours. Completion is likely.
POWER TOOLS: None
SKILL LEVEL: All levels
MATERIALS FEE: $20 to be collected at school. The optional fee for the doll is $150.
