INSTRUCTOR: Cristina Minischetti, Fellow
COURSE: Mosaic
PROJECT: Mosaic Frame With Mirror

This is a three-color mosaic with a “Guilloche” pattern. Guilloche is the twisted rope design often used in borders and to frame elements of Roman mosaics. Students will make this mosaic using the same technique used in the real size ones. There are two methods to do mosaic works: the direct method and the indirect method (sometimes called reverse method). Students will use the indirect one where pieces are temporarily fixed right side down into a removable backing; this is then pressed into a prepared adhesive bed. The backing material is removed to expose the design, right side up which is then grouted.
The instructor will provide baked polymer clay sheets in the project colors. Students will cut the tiles from these clay sheets, shape them (when different shapes are required), and glue them on the base. The mosaic will be finished with grouting, cleaning and buffering. The finished sample mosaic size is 2" x 2"; each tiny tile is 1/32" x 1/32"; and the number of tiles on the mosaic is approximately 1400.
TIME: 24 hours. Completion is likely.
POWER TOOLS: None
SKILL LEVEL: Intermediate and advanced. Since students will be working on very small parts, lighting and magnification are highly recommended. It is almost impossible to work on this kind of project without it.
MATERIALS FEE: $30 to be collected at school. The instructor will provide some tools together with all the material necessary for this project and detailed written directions to keep for future reference.
