INSTRUCTOR: Mary Grady O'Brien, Fellow
COURSE: Japanning
PROJECT: William & Mary Dressing Table

o'brien

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Simply stated, japanning can be described as the layering of metallic color upon a pattern that has been applied with paint and gesso. It is then enhanced with shades of gold, silver, and copper. This technique originated in China and became widely popular in Europe, England, and then spread to the colonies. Fortunately, we have the advantage of present day materials. We will be using gold paint, wet powders, and several types of gold leaf to achieve the desired Oriental effect without the very involved steps that were part of early process. Students will be inspired by authentic patterns collected from a publication authored by Ellen S. Sabine, a recognized authority on the subject. She offers a clear and helpful guide appropriate to the period. There will be ample instruction and prototypes to guide students; however, individual expression is always encouraged. Birds, flowers, figures, and simple structures will be among the pattern choices. Learning to simplify this somewhat complicated process will be a valuable asset to anyone who values the rich effect of this type of ornamentation. Available will be a Mark Murphy Rhode Island William & Mary dressing table (circa 1720–45) upon which to apply the design.

Emphasis will be on technique rather than finished project. It is likely that the more experienced student will complete the table. In general, the goal will be to have all the designs developed and selected panels applied with gold. There is no rush to finish. It is the instructor’s desire that students enjoy the process, develop skills, and build confidence.
