INSTRUCTOR: Diane Almeyda, Artisan
COURSE: Metalwork/Enameling
PROJECT: Filigree Wirework Stained Glass

Learn the secrets of creating miniature stained glass using real glass and metal. Students will create an impressive and beautiful piece of miniature stained glass by using the enameling technique known as plique-a-jour—often referred to as the “tour de force” of enameling. Seldom seen…and practiced by very few, this is an opportunity to learn a “lost” technique.
The process begins with forming fine ribbons of silver wire and soldering them together. When the fine metal “skeleton” is complete, ground glass is applied to the openings and then melted in a kiln. This technique lends itself to designs resembling smaller versions of the wonderful cathedral windows of earlier times. But that’s just the beginning. Students can use their imagination and incorporate their stained glass piece of art in a firescreen, changing screen, or piece of furniture. Many different settings can show off the artwork!
In addition to learning silver soldering that jewelers employ (high temperature using a torch), students will also learn how to prepare and apply enamels, as well as learn finishing techniques to complete the resulting enamel work of art.
