This class will address two techniques used in creating the most realistic miniatures – ageing and volume. In the morning, students begin by removing mold marks, polishing and assembling the metal teakettle provided by the instructors. They will then learn how to apply a used, dirty and aged effect to the kettle, a technique applicable to any miniature medium. The afternoon session will address putting out the “volume” of an object by applying lights and shadows using paint. This technique is crucial to making realistic miniatures with amazing detail and dimension. Students will be working on a 1/12th scale hair dryer for this lesson. Students will leave the class with both projects, printed materials for reference and knowledge about ageing and volume that they will then be able to apply to future projects.
